Hi Daryl!

DS> Well, a Crossbuck means YIELD TO TRAINS...even if that's the
DS> only thing there (no lights, bells, or gates). At some crossings,
DS> there is also a YIELD or STOP sign.
BM> Aw heck: we thought the 'X' meant "train crosses here"!
DS> It also means "X Marks The Spot".

Stand here - right here -- I dare you!

DS> If the police catch you going through the crossing while the
DS> lights are flashing, they will issue a ticket. And, if you're a
DS> CDL driver, you just lost it, and are going to jail.
BM> Reminds me of when there was a long traffic backup because the lights
BM> were flashing (but gates up) -- lights were mistriggered but no train.
DS> That happens at times. There is a toll free number at grade
DS> crossings to call the railroad to notify them of a
DS> problem...whether with the train itself, or with the grade
DS> crossing signals or gates. And, I've done that several times
 DS> lately.

I don't recall seeing one, though might be on a 5x8" sign and so hard to
see much less read when zipping by.

BM> Of course us drivers didn't know that so assumed a train was coming.
BM> After a while did start to go through: good news is there is a bit of a
BM> sight distance; bad news is the sight distance isn't that long due to
 BM> the trees and undergrowth.
DS> At night, if you overdrive your headlights, the train could be
DS> moving through when you get there.

In this situation the darkness of night could have been an advantage as
one could see the headlight of the locomotive, though one probably
wouldn't be thinking of the visible bright light but rather the
invisible dark train.
